Educational History

Katrina, DJ Lusion, grew up in a small town named Courtenay.  In this small town on Vancouver Island, B.C., she went to pre-school, elementary school, junior high school, and part of high school.

Pre-school was some of the years that she doesn't remember, but all she says is she remembers her biological father would drop her off and pick her up.  She ate some green playdough once, but what kid hasn't eaten a foreign substance before?

Her Elementary school was a few schools.  First, for grades K - 2, she went to Puntledge Park Elementary school.  After that, she went to Glacier View Elementary school for grades 3, and half of four.  That year, the new elementary school near her home was built, and all the grade 6 classes, and one other class, her class, was moved to the new school.  The new school was called Valley View Elementary.  This brand new school had lots of space, and room for lots of kids.  She went here for the rest of grade 4, until she graduated grade 6.

Her Junior High school was just right next to her elementary school.  They were built almost side-by-side.  It was called Courtenay Junior, now called Courtenay High School, and she went there for all grades of Junior high, being grades 7 through 9.  There she met one of her best friends, Lindsey Barber.  They hung out together almost every day, and would go into the "woodsy" area of their neighborhood, and they played a game like Survivor.  They would make beds of ferns, eat berries, and pretend to hunt wild game that would venture near their encampment.  These were some of the memories that she remembers best as a child.  She, still to this day, is friends with Lindsey, but she lives half an hour away from where Katrina lives now, so it is difficult for them to visit each other.

For her High School years, she partially went to Georges P. Vanier High School.  For half of grade 10, she went to that school, and had a good time.  She met new friends, had a good education, did well in school, and had fun doing it.  Her and her friends would hang around in the small forest behind the school, and sit and have fun.  Vanier was built for about 800 students, but unfortunately, since it was the only high school in all of Courtenay, it's population rose to an uncontainable level of 2000.  The school had 20 extra portables installed just to house all the extra students, and their classrooms and teachers.  The school hallways were crowded from shoulder to shoulder, and to get to your next class was a fight.  Despite these odds, she did extremely well in that school, accomplishing a perfect grade point average for the first semester.  In May of that year, she moved from Courtenay, to live in Calgary, because the company her step-father worked for, had moved it's headquarters to Calgary, and they needed his computer expertise.  Here, she went to Ernest Manning High School, and met new friends, and started to become inspired to DJ.  When she went to her first rave, she was so hyped up, she was jumping up and down.  She couldn't believe the DJs, the music, the lights...the BASS!  In her small hometown, there was never such a thing, as the raves she went to.

Katrina's other love is her love of cars.  She currently spends a lot of time working on hers, trying to make it faster, and look better, and she's succeeding little by little.  "Whenever I see a hopped up car, I always want a closer look, even when I'm driving, or just walking by.  I love going to car shows, local club meets, and anywhere else I have a chance to see new cars, and new ideas.  Unfortunately, the aftermarket is small for my car, but I just might end up going to University to become a mechanic, so from there, I'm sure I can expand the abilities of my car, despite the small amount of aftermarket parts for my car.  Engine swap, engine bore, port and polish, all that fun stuff.  I have quite a few friends with nice cars, and luckily, they let me drive them!  Hahaha."

Katrina is finished high school, but is currently at home.  She plans on returning to University when she reaches the age of 21, or sooner.

DJ Lusion - The Race

Before Katrina moved to Calgary, she only listened to Classical music.  Occaisionally, she'd listen to the radio, but didn't actually own any other kinds of CDs other than classical.  When Katina came to Calgary, that all changed.

Katrina knew she liked Electronica music, but didn't really bother to actively buy CDs.  The first time she heard electronica music, she thinks, "Is when I downloaded a demo for a game called Rollcage, awesome game for ANYONE and you should try it.  I heard the music faintly in the background because I was too intensely into the game.  I loved the game so much, that I told my dad about it.  The next day, I come home from school, and there, sitting on the computer, is the game 'Rollcage'.  I was so happy, I installed it right away, and started playing it.  As I progressively got better at it, I didn't have to pay much attention, and didn't have to try as hard.  That's when I think I noticed the music more conciously.  I thought it was so cool.  I knew it was techno, but I didn't really know what kind.  That's when I think I really fell in love with electronica music."  Until she moved to Calgary, she only owned that one game CD with that kind of music on it.  She started buying all kinds of CDs, ranging from Rock to Rap to Electronica.  She found that out of all the genres, she seemed to like Jungle and Drum N' Bass the most.  After she went to her first rave, it inspired her so much, that she just had to do it too.

She started to become obsessed with DJing, and wanting to be a DJ.  That's when she found out about American DJ by going to www.djtools.com acciddentally while searching for PCDJ programs.  She joined the forum at American DJ, and fell in love with what she saw, and what she could learn.  That's when she met DJ SKILZ, the main promotion DJ of that company.  She saw him in action, and she was set for life.  SKILZ's counterpart, clipuptags, was also a very inspiring character in the evolution of DJ Lusion.

She started to download programs, and try to make music.  She found a PCDJ software, and tried mixing two songs together: "I was bouncing up and down in my chair I was so excited.  I thought it sounded so wicked at the time, until I started to hear what others could do.  Then I thought 'I want to be that good, but I want to be better'.  I started to try and make music, and it was rather succesful, other than I was using a MIDI sequencing program to make my melodies."  The first song she made was called "The Night".  She released it on www.audiogalaxy.com and asked the members of her group, to rate it.  "People seemed to really like it.  One person said, and I'll never forget: 'One day, I'm going to have to pay to see her spin, man!'.  Ever since then, I've been devoted to trying to make my music better, and in my opinion, and the opinion of others, they seem to be making progress, and I'm proud of them."

Her favorite song that she has created so far: DJ Lusion - Delerious, is a Drum N' Bass song, she is most pleased.  "It's more of the genre that I've been wanting to create ever since I started listening to Drum N' Bass music.  I absolutely LOVE the drum beats in this song, and so does everyone else.  So far, my music has appealed to all my friends, and the support of my friends and family, is what I appreciate most.  It makes me feel important, like I'm already famous."

She continues to make more music of this genre, with her most recent song: DJ Lusion - The Race.  With this song, she tried to incorporate her other love, which would be cars and racing, into her music.  She, and a few of her friends, thinks she's succeeded, but she's not quite satisfied.  "The program I'm using has it's limits, and I'm reaching them.  There isn't enough options anymore for variation of what I make, so I'm currently trying to get a program called Reason.  I messed around with this program at a friends house, along with his turntables!  That program is MUCH more complex, and offers more variety than what I'm using now.  Although, playing with the turntables took up more time than playing with Reason, I love it!  Even without the people dancing, screaming, and cheering, just sitting there and mixing beats is enough adrenaline for now."

With your help, she can be even more famous, so spread the word people, a new DJ is here, and she's gonna rock your world.
